Vocab List #4 and Sentences
1. apostate: a person who forsakes his religion, cause
The apostate no longer believed in sacrificing for good fortune.
2. effusive: pouring out; overflowing
When you caught open the surface of the skin on the stomach, the fat looks effusive.
3. impasse: a position or situation from which there is no escape
Our hero was stuck in an impasse, and his life was before his eyes.
4. euphoria: a state of intense happiness and self-confidence
After completing the hardest test of the year I was in euphoria.
5. lugubrious: mournful, dismal, or gloomy, especially in an affected,exaggerated, or unrelieved manner
All of the people were lugubrious at the funeral.
6. bravado: a pretentious, swaggering display of courage.
Every soldier shows some has a kind of bravado.
7. consensus: general agreement or concord
There was a consensus between the two armies, there soon would be peace.
8. dichotomy: division into two parts, kinds
There is a dichotomy of gangsters, the jokesters, and the real ones.
9. constrict: to draw or press in
It helps to stop the bleeding if you constrict the wound.
10. gothic: of or pertaining to the music,especially of northern Europe, of the period roughly from1200 to 1450
Most old cathedrals have gothic architecture.
11. punctilio: a fine point, particular, or detail, as of conduct, ceremony,or procedure.
A wedding should always be organized into a punctilio.
12. metamorphosis: any complete change in appearance, character,circumstances, etc.
Most people think of evolution as a metamorphosis, but it is not that extreme.
13. raconteur: a person who is skilled in relating stories and anecdotes interestingly.
Often, good rappers can be pretty capable raconteurs.
14. sine qua non: an indispensable condition, element, or factor; something essential
Our blood is our sine qua non to heal our own wounds, becuase of the ability to clot.
15. quixotic: impulsive and often rashly unpredictable
Teenagers who have a lot of freedom are often quixotic.
16. vendetta: any prolonged and bitter feud, rivalry, contention, or the like
Duels during the renaissance era were common and began or resulted from a vendetta.
17. non sequitur: a statement containing an illogical conclusion
Kids at an early age say things that are non sequitur.
18. mystique: an aura of mystery or mystical power surrounding aparticular occupation or pursuit
Fairies supposedly have a mystique about them.
19. quagmire: an area of miry or boggy ground whose surface yields underthe tread; a bog.
Witches, in fantasy stories, most times live in a quagmire.
20. parlous: involving or full of grave risk or peril; hazardous; dangerous
Heroes embark on parlous quests.
